The school's current philosophy is to maintain the highest standards in academic, sporting, cultural and social areas within a disciplined and caring environment.

We pride ourselves on having a conservative, yet progressive approach to education, supported by well qualified teaching staff.

Students attend Secondary School from age 13 and sit a National moderation examination at age 15, 16 and 17 (NCEA).

English for Speakers of Other Languages
The ESOL programme is designed to ensure that all students for whom English is a second language will be given the best possible opportunity to reach their full potential in learning English.

The student's own language is valued and used as a starting point for new experiences.

Subject Aims

  • To identify the curriculum needs of ESOL students, to assess language needs accurately and to facilitate the placement of these students in the mainstream classes.
  • To provide suitable curriculum subject support programme and a support network for students learning English as another language.
  • To foster confidence in all facets of English language at a level that ensures success and stimulation so that the ESOL student is better able to cope with life at school, with subject content and with life in New Zealand.

Rationale
Language is central to learning in all subjects. More effective learning occurs if it involves speaking, writing, listening and reading skills. Every subject has its own terminology, therefore language is the responsibility of every teacher.

The ESOL teacher will assist other subject teachers to use strategies that will enable them to teach ESOL students effectively.

Homestay Accommodation
Homestay accommodation (full board - 3 meals a day plus washing) can be arranged for approximately $NZ210 per week. There will be a $60 placement fee for homestay and $100 pick-up fee from the airport.
