Cycling Success - 22 September 2009
We had a new group on the podium last weekend on finals day. The Senior Girls (Laura Newman-Watt, Esther Smith, Chloe Harding-Sheath, Jenna Smith, Freya Svendsen and absent: Bernadette Stevens) won the handicap points series for 2009. Well done girls, your best time yet was 24.35 seconds.
We have had a near perfect season weather-wise and Massey Senior Boys broke the Massey record earlier this year. They placed 4th over all and are well placed for Nationals.
Each and every team has improved by huge amounts and JP has them all peaking at the perfect time. Thank you to all the team managers & parents for their input at the waterfront, this could not be done with out you.
Nationals here we come!

4th Grade Rugby Report - 23 August 2009
Well this certainly was an interesting game with a referee being assigned to it from another planet, presumably in the best interests of intergalactic relations. His rulings seemed to be based on guess work and were an endless source of amusement to both coaches as to who would win the lottery. The only good thing I could say about him was he was the same for both sides. The players from both sides should be commended for the patience they showed and for contributing to an exciting game won 15-14 by Rangitoto. We only had 16 players with our only sub being a greyhound like winger. Several of the guys were suffering from late night parties so it was no surprise the lack of subs caught them out in the last 10 minutes when the winning try was scored by Rangitoto. All the players ran themselves to a standstill and as a coach I couldn't ask for any more. A big game was played by Branden Lorimer, who gets player of the day. Enoch Thomas gets a big mention for his best game this season. Also, Alex Bennett for his normal high contribution and Jake Smith who led the team by example.

4th Grade Rugby Report - 25 July 2009
Saturday was a perfect day to play rugby with the sun shining and
the field in good order. It turned into one helluva game with both
sides giving it to each other from the get go.Northcote were
playing to stay in the top 4 and we were playing for pride. All the
scoring was done in the first 15 minutes and from that point on it
was one huge battle with both sides having opportunities to win
the game with neither being able to deliver the killer blow. That
was due to a few wrong options but mostly due to some outstanding
defence by both teams. After a technical session with Colin
McMurtrie during the week our forward pack gave Northcote a lesson
in scrummaging.Even with a 7 man pack for 10 mins in the first
half our scrum still dominated them.brodyn Knuckey absolutely
destroyed his opposite in the front row and with a huge effort in
general play was deservedly named player of the day.All the guys
gave it plenty and Jacob Smith deserves a mention with his best
game of the season and a fine try. It was frustrating being beaten
12-7 for the second game in a row but I guess it shows how even
most sides are in this grade and it is just the little things the
games are won or lost on.The guys are determined to finish the
season strongly and I will take that any day of the week.

NZSS Orienteering - 19 July 2009
Well the stage curtain fell in style on a stellar five year period for Massey High School with an absolute dominant performance from the boys. Two national titles and a runner up in the individuals. It doesn't get any better than that. This year Matthew Tyler and Gene Beveridge have swept all before them winning every available title there is to win both at school, club, national level and with Tyler Casey an unprecedented 3 relay titles in one year. Add to that the 5 AKSS titles in as many years, 2 NISS and one other NZSS title in 2007 it's an outstanding achievement.
In the individuals Matthew edged out Gene to win his first NZ Sec Schools title They were 5 mins ahead of 3rd. Tyler finishing 9th gave Massey 3 in the top 10 and considering he's more a part timer than the others an outstanding result at this level.
The relays was pure magic as the three of them systematically ground the opposition into submission with a total performance leading from Gene's first control to Matt's last with no mispunches and few mistakes as they cleared out to win by over 7 mins from Napier Boys. It was the utimate performance.

A very good effort with Dion Smith being away in Australia racing. These boys got third with only 4 riders, which is just a huge effort!

4th Grade Rugby Report - 20 June 2009
Saturday's game against Westlake[2] was a real battle of attrition with outstanding defence by both sides and the game only being decided by two penalty goals to the Westlake side. Our guys gave their all for the entire game but could not quite deliver the killer blow. Our cause was not helped in the 2nd half with both props picking up injuries which made scrum time difficult. I am still waiting for our reserve prop, Jai Roatz, to turn up to the game. Kyle and Jacob W battled gamely to the end but Westlake took advantage and pinched four or five tightheads in the 2nd half that hurt our chances.
The forward pack, as a unit, really stood out in matching the opposition in intensity and work rate. No one more so than David Van Huffel in a player of the day performance. Matt Joynt had his usual dynamic game from fullback. Crunch time from here for the team as they need to produce six wins on the trot to have a shot at making the semi's. We love a challenge at Massey High. Watch this space.

4th Grade Rugby Report - 13 June 2009
Not a very memorable game against Kingsway on Saturday. We had to use golden oldie scrums from the get go because the opposition had three front rowers but no hooker and the guys just couldn't get themselves into the game. The exception was Jai Roatz who absolutely owned the first half with a dynamic display in all facets of the game. However, after an expletive laden motivational talk from the coach at halftime and some personnel changes to the team they managed to draw clear with three second half tries to put the game beyond doubt. I have to give credit to the Kingsway side who tackled their hearts out all game. Jay Collett-Nye had a terrific game, especially in the first half cleaning up the loose ball [there was plenty of it] and running strongly from 2nd five to secure the player of the day award. I am looking forward to practice on Monday although the players may feel some trepidation at what awaits them. Roll on Monday.

4th Grade Rugby Report - 6 June 2009
Saturday’s game against the front running Westlake 1 side was a lot closer than the final score of 7-24 indicates. But for an ounce of luck and slightly better finishing, we could have had 17 points on the board at half time instead of being 0-10 down. The second half mirrored the first and even the wind conspired against us with the team playing into the wind the whole game after a wind direction change around half time. The guys are starting to build some useful combinations and are coming to grips with the intensity and accuracy that is needed in this grade. Another big game from our lock Trevor Cooksen saw him named player of the day and Matt Joynt was also outstanding in his first game for the season at #6.

4th Grade Rugby Report - 3 June 2009
It was another good win for the team on Saturday. Long Bay played a lot better than their recent results indicated they would and it turned into a very willing contest. The game was spoiled somewhat by the injury to Dylan Chisholm who sustained a dislocated knee 25 minutes into the game. We made him comfortable but could not move him so both teams moved the post pads and flags to the #2 field and play resumed after a 10-15 minute break. It was real pity for Dylan as he was having a blinder of a game. The guys are starting to play with some structure in their game but once again it was their outstanding defence that was a feature. Alex Bennett was named player of the day for a strong game both on defence and attack. There was some terrific work by the tight five and some bruising head on defence by Laga To'omata when he came on in the second half. We are all looking forward to the Westlake game this Saturday.
For the record, the ref called both teams together after the final whistle and thanked them for working with him under difficult circumstances with the injury and a pretty wet field and congratulated them on a good game. Also one of the Long Bay parents came up to me and passed on the thanks for everyone from Long Bay for the way that both our team and supporters conducted themselves. It was the most enjoyable game they have had regardless of the score.

Premier Basketball Results - 20 May 2009
Massey Girls 77 vs Northcote Girls 63
Mesha Blair top scored for the Massey Girls team with a career high 46 points from the starting centre. She was well assisted from her captain Chevannah Paalvast with some spectacular blocks and passes into Mesha. Aroha Lawrence top scored for Northcote with 28 points as the tenacious guard was unstoppable with her drives to the basket. In the end Mesha Blair’s inside presence was just too strong for the visitors as Massey registered their first win of the season.
4th Grade Rugby Report - 18 May 2009
Although the score line of 60-0 would suggest the team played very well, I thought they played better the previous week. It is fair to say the skill level of Whangaparoa did not match their enthusiasm and once our guys realised that, WHITE LINE FEVER broke out in a lot of them. Once again the big positive from the game was the defence of our team that kept the opposition scoreless for the second week in a row. Matthew Joynt deservedly got player of the day and there were some impressive displays by some others, notably Alex Bennett, Jacob Smith, Kyle Forlong and Matt Warner. The subs that came on brought some good aggression into the game in the second half. There were no serious injuries to report.

OPEN LETTER TO ALL COLLEGE SPORT PLAYERS, COACHES AND SUPPORTERS - April 2009
The ASSHA Executive Board wishes to remind all players, coaches and supporters of their expectations around conduct and behaviour in College Sport competitions.
In 2008 to the widespread dismay of ASSHA members some unsavoury incidents involving players and coaches went unreported to the respective sports bodies and the ASSHA. One particular case played out extensively in the national media. These incidents brought the respective schools, team members, coaches and the sport into disrepute, and in doing so by implication the ASSHA, particularly as there were limited steps that the respective sports body and ASSHA could take, as the incidents went unreported and were not notified by way of complaint.
Players, coaches and supporters are reminded that the highest levels of sportsmanship, fair play and conduct are expected in relation to opposition players, coaches and officials. Objectionable language, sledging and the entering of the field of play by substitutes, spectators and coaches is totally unacceptable.
All ASSHA member schools are encouraged to follow the complaints process in 2009 to prevent the actions of a few impacting on all member schools. Every player, coach, supporter and team official has a responsibility to uphold the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.

Water polo - North Island Secondary School Championships - 25 March 2009
Last weekend both of Massey’s senior water polo teams participated in the North Island Secondary School Championships. Both teams played great games, but in particular this year’s Premier Girl’s team achieved a couple of firsts for Massey.
The Massey girls won 5 out of their 7 games with wins over Tauranga Girls High, Hutt Valley High, Queen Margaret College and Westlake Girls High (last year’s defending tournament champions). They played a griping semi-final game against top qualifier Sacred Heart Lower Hutt, tying the score in the last minute of the game and winning it by 1 in the second round of penalty shoot outs with Danielle Chandler, our youngest player, scoring the winning goal.
In the finals, Massey faced last year’s National champions Diocesan. They played a tough game and finished second in the tournament. This is a fantastic achievement as it is the first time in Massey’s 29 year water polo history that a team has been in a final at a major secondary school tournament and the first time ever that Massey has had a medal placing.
Finally, to top the weekend off, Emily Ingoe and Katherine Tutini were both awarded Outstanding Player Awards.
Well done girls.

Basketball - Massey High vs MacLeans High School - 9 March 2009
5.30pm Allan Brewster Recreation Centre, Papatoetoe.
The Senior Boys Basketball team had a good outing in their first premier qualifying game vs Macleans College. Maclean had a full team of 12 players with 4 players over 6’4, on average they had the size on us.
However with mainly seniors in the Massey team, we had more experience and physical strength with the toughness of James Hemapo and Marlon Hamilton.
The game started off closely with both teams firing on all cylinders, with about 5 leads changes in the 1st quarter. Massey dominated the boards as part of our team goal for the game. Maclean’s just couldn’t find an answer to the physical strength of James H, Marlon H and Marin T.
By the start of 3rd quarter, Massey had a 11 point lead and turn on the pressure to finish the 3rd quarter with a 20 point lead. Jordan, Reagan and Lee had a solid performance and led the team well.
Young Adrian Prince and Joshua Tagaloa also came up with a solid game.
Massey takes on Auckland Grammar school on the 16 March at 7.30pm at the Trust Stadium to create history. This will be the first time Massey High Senior Boys can have an opportunity to qualify into the Auckland Premier League.
Team members:
Lee Cahill, Reagan Laidlaw, Marin T, Marlon Hamilton, Adrian Prince, Jordan Widodo, Joshua Tagaloa, James Hemapo.
Final score:
Massey 82 to Macleans 67
2nd Round Gillette Cup 20/20 Massey High V Orewa College - 1 March 2009
Massey High entered the 2nd round of the Gillette cup in hot form after a fantastic start in the 1st round. Orewa won the toss and elected to bat. Wickets were a plenty for Massey High with Kyle Brownlee taking 3/24 off 4 overs and Tyler Casey, back from injury with 3/7 from his 4 overs. Ryan Gedye and Jason Brown provided the pressure at their respective ends going for only 2 and 3 runs per over. This allowed the other bowlers to claim their reward. Wickets fell at regular stages throughout the Orewa innings and they finally finished on 90/9 off 20overs.
Massey High's reply got off to a shaky start with the loss of an early wicket but Thomas Lindstrom steadied the innings well, opening in this game in place of skipper Heath Moore. Thomas and Dylan Wallis got the runs flowing and a partnership between them of 81 was enough to see Massey High through. The massive home crowd of 10 people that sounded more like 100, provided an intimidating atmosphere that Massey batsmen thrived on. Both batsmen fell just before the required target but it was enough to give Massey High an easy win. Massey High finished on 94/4 off 17overs. Thomas Lindstrom scored 29 and Dylan Wallis 36, continuing his good form. Massey High will now play Lynfield College in the 3rd round next week at home.
Gillette Cup Result - 26 February 2009
Orewa College 90/9 (Kyle Brownlee 24/6 Tyler Casey 7/3)
Massey High 94/4 (Dylan Wallis 36 Thomas Lindstrom 29)
Win to Massey High by 6 wickets.
Our next Gillette Cup game will be at home against one of the following: Lynfield College, One Tree Hill College or Marcellin College.
Massey High 1st Eleven v Waitakere College 1st Eleven - 19 February 2009
Massey High 1st Eleven got off to a winning start in the Auckland Gillette Cup 20/20 Competition, with a 122run win over Waitakere College. Massey High were sent in to bat and lost an early wicket but Heath Moore and Dylan Wallis consolidated the innings well, scoring a partnership of 118runs. At the 12th over mark both batsmen let loose and took the score from 74 to 148. Heath Moore anchored well and was eventually out on 44. Dylan Wallis finished with a blistering 69 not out off 50 balls including 8 boundaries. Jason Brown played a handy knock of 25 not out from 11 balls. Dylan Wallis & Jason Brown finished the innings both not out and Massey High on a healthy 182/2 from their 20overs.
Waitakere College were then bowled out after only 14 overs scoring a misely 60. Dylan Taylor chimed in with 3 -16 from his 4 overs and Thomas Lindstrom 2 – 6 from his 3 overs. A good start to the season for Massey High. The next Gillette Cup game will be next week at home against either Whanaparaoa College or Orewa College.
