Year 13 Blue Academic Tie Recipient

Congratulations to our Year 13 Blue Tie recipient for Term 2 - Jamal Siyad-Hussein (13TFM).

Jamal's story is quite amazing...

Arriving in New Zealand from Somalia, he began his NCEA journey needing a reader/writer to assist him with submitting assessments and exams. He progressed quickly and gained both NCEA Level 1 and 2 at Merit Level, improving his understanding and grades dramatically each year.

He received the Faculty of Student Support Services Award in 2019, and the Prime Minister’s Award for Educational Excellence in 2020, presented to him by the Right Honourable Jacinda Ardern.

He has been involved in table tennis, Robotics, and school productions, and has been a member of the MHS Big Band, Jazz Combo and Orchestra since 2018, and the school choir Sublimitas (of which he is now the male leader) since 2019.

He is currently studying jazz improvisation with Paul Norman, the director of the  Auckland Secondary School’s Big Band, and guitar technique with Dixon Nacey from the Auckland University Jazz School. Both teachers have commented on this student’s incredible ability to soak up new concepts, and are in awe of his ability at such a young age.

While he may not have gained hundreds of Excellence credits, this student has nonetheless exemplified excellence in his academic progress, and in everything he does.

Congratulations Jamal.
