The Music Department at Massey High School aims to encourage students to explore and develop their understanding of all different styles of music. We have many different groups that students can perform as a part of, including our Choir – Sublimitas, Jazz Combo, Big Band, Rock/Pop/Funk/R&B Bands, vocal groups and Chamber music groups. We also encourage students to compose their own music which they can enter in competitions like RockQuest/Tangata Beats and The Lion Foundation Song Writing competition.

We offer students the option of taking all the standards in NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 if they wish to, but they must take a minimum of 20 internal credits as well as sit one external exam each year. Students study music from the Medieval period right through to current Popular music, as well as music theory and aural skills, performance and composition. Students can take itinerant lessons on their preferred instrument to help support their development and ensure they are progressing as a performer. We also ensure our students can use current industry-standard notation and recording software such as Sibelius, MixCraft and Logic Pro X. It is our belief that students who take music need to have all these skills if they are to be successful studying music at a tertiary level and further into the professional world.

The music department takes great pride in the fact that we have had many talented students successfully gain NCEA Scholarship. Here is a list of students who have gained Scholarship over the past few years: Iggy Palmero-Epstein (2021), Jessica Woodhams and Ana Jeon (2020), Ana Jeon – Outstanding Scholarship, Mana Waiariki and Kai Smith (2019), Alan Motufoua (2017), Haden Te Haara, Rita Laing, Elliot Nicholson, Luke Dizon (2016), Sebastian Wieczorek (2015).
