RYDA - Road Safety Education

Nick Hackett, Assistant Principal

On Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd February, all the Yr 12 and 13 students at MHS were able to take part in the RYDA programme at the Trusts Arena on Central Park Drive. This highly engaging programme promotes driver safety with real life speed demonstrations, advice about vision when driving and safer driving skills.

Road Safety Education Limited provide the RYDA programme to senior high school students across New Zealand.  Schools in West Auckland are very fortunate to have RYDA sponsored by The Henderson Rotary Club and the experience is fees free for these students. Additional sponsorship to assist with bus transport to the venue is generously supplied by Tony Soljan.

A key event of the RYDA programme is when students bring all their experience and ideas together as they participate, as a year group, in the highly engaging and interactive RYDA workshops – here they experience a live speed and stopping demonstration, practice speaking up and managing mind-state with fun role plays, talk to driving instructors and police about their responsibilities and even investigate a real crash by interviewing the survivor.

The photos below show some of our students involved. Once again, many thanks to the generous sponsorship by The Henderson Rotary Club and Tony Soljan.
