Scholarship in Music - Iggy Palmero-Epstein

Year 11 student, Iggy Palmero-Epstein, gained an NCEA Scholarship in Music (Performance) in 2021. Iggy is an exceptional saxophonist who has played for the school Big Band and Jazz Combo as well forming his own band with other school members called ‘98% Funk’. They made it to the semi-finals of the Stand Up Stand Out competition in 2021 before it was unfortunately cancelled.

Iggy’s life revolves around the saxophone and jazz and his passion for everything music is unparalleled. He spends hours a day practicing his craft and was an ideal candidate to sit the music scholarship exam even though he was in Year 11. Iggy performed a 15 minute hand-picked programme of pieces to exhibit his wide range skills on the saxophone including his ability to improvise to an exceptionally high level. As part of his submission he also completed a 3000 word critical reflective analysis on his journey to prepare and perform his pieces. The analysis discussed his song choices, how he prepared to perform each piece and a reflection on how the performance went.

We would like to congratulate Iggy on his achievement as he has demonstrated Massey High School’s moto to ‘Seek the Heights’.

Above is short clip from Iggy’s scholarship submission.
