Forklift Driving Course

On Wednesday 30th July five of our Senior Gateway students completed their Forklift Driving Course with the TSS Group. This experience gained them credit and a certificate and will lead to Warehousing and Logistics work experience.

In the words of one of the students:

“In these photos, you can see us completing the stacking and de-stacking of the pallets. The purpose of this was to see how well we could maneuver the forklift, and how well we could control the lifting and tilting of the forks. When using a forklift to stack or unstack pallets, safety comes from being prepared and careful. pallets must be in good condition, loaded evenly, and centred on the forks so the load remains stable and within the forklift’s rated capacity (a forklift’s rated capacity is how much it can carry).

While moving a load the forks should stay low and you should travel slowly, avoiding sudden stops, sharp turns, or elevations of the load. This helps prevent tipping.

In these photos, you can see Sanerivi completing the 3-point rule. The 3-point safety rule when entering a forklift, or for many other types of vehicles, is a safety guideline stating that when entering or exiting a forklift, you should always maintain three points of contact with the machine until you are safely seated or on the ground.

This means having two hands and one foot in contact with the forklift when getting up.  then exit with your back facing outwards. This safety guideline helps prevent falls and injuries by maintaining stability during the transition”.

Drone Health & Safety Course

On Thursday 24th July the Year 12 and 13 Gateway students took part in a Drone Health and Safety Course, gaining 11 Level 3 NCEA credits.

In the words of a student “It was a really fun day. We went over the rules and safety stuff that you need to know before flying a drone, such as how to check everything before take-off and how to fly responsibly. After that, we all took turns flying the drone. We kept switching roles, so everyone got to be the pilot, the co-pilot, and the marshaller. It was such a cool experience, and way more fun than I expected!”

Roaring with Excitement: Senior Students at the Wildlife Science Champions Careers Expo.

Written by Mrs Hargraves (Careers)

On Wednesday, 23 July 2025 a group of very excited Senior Gateway and Biology students visited Auckland Zoo to attend the Wildlife Science Champions Career Expo along with other Auckland Secondary Schools.

Students listened to keynote speakers, panel discussions about conservation and why it is important. Later in the morning students were then given the opportunity to take part in workshops facilitated by Ministry for Primary Industries, Revive Our Gulf, University of Auckland, Auckland Zoo, Matuku Link, Mountains to Sea, MERC and Auckland Council and then visit stalls promoting conservation and marine based groups like Coast Guard.

We would like to thank the Auckland Zoo for inviting the students, of Massey High School, to this interesting and thought-provoking experience.
