Principal's Panui

5 May 2026

Term 2 is now in full swing. A busy few weeks has seen the latest International Students arrive in our school. They, along with those students new to the school since the start of this year have all been formally welcomed into Massey by way of Whakatau conducted by Te Whare Ahuru.

It was a real privilege to attend the First Foundation Scholarship Evening in the first week of term, where 4 of our students received their scholarships along with recipients from across the country. The scholarships are worth nearly $25,000 each and also come with extensive mentoring. A huge thanks to the Dines Foundation who have been instrumental in providing Joud Al Kaki (Class of 2025), Shadman Amiry, Mutien Afemata, and Zephaniah Lai with such extensive support for their future success.

Our Student Leaders stood proudly to represent Massey High School at the Swanson RSA ANZAC Service – with the National Anthem sung beautifully by our students Kaia Topia and Niko Gomi.

Work has commenced on the refurbishment of E Block – a project that will see all classrooms in the block be fully reconditioned. Over the holidays a number of other projects around the school were completed which will make the school environment much more welcoming come Winter.

Term 2 sees the resumption of Winter Sports, a real focus for many of our students. It’s great to see the increase in numbers taking part across a wide variety of sports, and I look forward to getting courtside and on the sidelines over the coming months.

Parent Teacher meetings take place this week – a reminder was sent earlier this week if appointments have not yet been booked. This is a great opportunity to discuss progress, celebrate success, and discuss effective strategies moving forward.

Many of our Year 9 and 10 students are commencing the new SMART (Student Monitoring, Assessment and reporting Tool) Testing this week, with Massey High School adopting the new system as one of the first users. This new tool is designed to provide consistent information about student progress to support teaching and learning decisions. These are short, digital assessments that are automatically marked and will (in the future) provide instant reports designed to track progress across multiple years. They are a low pressure ‘learning check-in’ designed to be accessible and inclusive. The first round of tests will take place during English and Maths classes.

Finally, with Term 2 comes colder weather – this is not an excuse for standards around uniform to slip. Our Deans remain vigilant on non-uniform items given the prevalence of uniform options available to our students.
