Principal's Pānui

5 June 2026

The weeks fly by at this time of the year. Many of our junior students have been involved in the CAA’s for Literacy and Numeracy over the past couple of weeks. Their behaviour and approach to the exams was admirable.

As a staff, we have been processing the recent announcements with regard to the confirmed changes to curriculum and assessment over the next few years. For parents of students in Years 10 to 13, these changes will not affect you. For our Year 9 students (and those still to come to our school) they will – All parents/caregivers of Year 9 students received a special newsletter earlier this week which unpacked the changes for them.

We have also welcomed nearly 700 Year 8 students into the school as part of our Year 8 Day programme for students from our contributing schools so that they can get a taste of secondary school life. This then leads into our Open Night which takes place on 16th June. A huge thanks to our student helpers who have made the two days a resounding success and ensured that all of our visitors had a really enjoyable experience.

We are expecting a similar sized Year 9 cohort for 2027 which is exciting. Our Board have just confirmed that there will be 40 Out of Zone places available (for Year 9 only) for 2027, if this affects you in terms of siblings (or someone you know) make sure you are aware of the relevant dates for applications.

Progress is underway for our new classroom block, with the exploratory process commencing in the lead up to demolition of an old block. We will keep you posted on this project. The refurbishment of E Block has reached the half-way point, with the finished rooms looking amazing. New furniture for these rooms is expected to arrive in the next few weeks ensuring that E Block will provide the sort of classroom environment that our students and staff deserve. We have also lodged plans with the Ministry to expand our existing canopy to cover another 2 netball courts. When complete, this will provide more covered spaces for our students, provide greater flexibility for the teaching of PE, and provide greater useable space for our extra-curricular activities and community events.

In terms of upcoming events, the big one in the final week of the term (Tuesday 30th June to Thursday 2nd July) is our Community Showcase – an event which shows of the most talented students (past and present) of Massey High School – and of our contributing schools who perform on each night as well. It is always a fantastic event so get your tickets before they sell out.
