Keeping Safe on Electric Bikes and E-Scooters

Working together to keep our young people and community safe.

New Zealand Police have noticed an increase in young people riding high-powered electric bikes, e-dirt bikes and e-scooters that are not legal to use without the correct licence or registration.

Their main concern is keeping young people safe. These powerful vehicles can cause serious injuries if they are ridden carelessly or are not used legally.

There is often confusion about the rules, but as a general guide, dirt bikes and electric-powered bikes with motors over 300W must meet New Zealand road rules. Riding illegally or dangerously could result in fines, charges, or the vehicle being seized.

Police will continue to educate young riders about the rules, but they will also take action where unsafe or antisocial riding is identified.

We encourage parents and caregivers to talk with their children about riding safely and responsibly. Together, we can help keep our young people and our community safe.
