Behind the Crime Scene
Education Outside the Classroom
Allie and Tom Coyle from Forensic Insight led two 2.5-hour workshops for Year 11–13 students interested in pathways related to forensic science and the Police Force.
Tom is a forensic scientist who worked at the Metropolitan Police, New Scotland Yard, for 18 years and with the New Zealand Police for 13 years. He is a King’s Honours recipient, and he and his wife, Allie, are the founders of Forensic Insight Ltd — New Zealand’s first authentic CSI school programme.
The workshops provided students with an insight into the world of crime scene investigation using modern forensic equipment. Students explored fingerprints and other trace evidence, including DNA, footwear, hair, fibres and entomology, through hands-on activities and a “who’s done it?” mock crime scene in an engaging and fun format.
